If you’ve been around the Web, chances are good that you’re likely already writing content with a site like BuzzFeed or Vocal. Some of your articles already have been published elsewhere online as well, but are still underwritten with a bit of work to be done before they can generate enough traffic to earn you any money. It has never occurred to me to become an author for free and, because I am not earning a salary or income at all, it is something that only seems logical, but it isn’t.

With such a high level of competition between bloggers writing on sites like Medium and Vocal, my personal experience of becoming an author for free was just not very relevant to anyone else’s or even mine. When I decided to start a blog in January 2021, one thing jumped into my brain immediately: “How much does this whole thing cost? How long do they take? Do I need to write every so often to make a living?” Not only was there no actual pay structure, but there was also no word-count restriction at all when writing anything online. My initial response was to think about how many words I would need to write an article and then spend time thinking if perhaps there was a way to buy a cheap writer. There is, and I will continue to point out, however, because I believe there is indeed a legitimate reason why we all need to pay writers to write, even if it isn’t to earn a dime of their hard work.

(Note: I am assuming that you’ll be reading this piece later.) Now let me go forth and tell you what five things you need to know about writing for money. I like providing some light articles to get your creative juices flowing, even if it makes little sense to write for others. Please note that I am NOT recommending making a career out of it.

1. First, please keep in mind that I am writing articles for no other reason than my reasons, nor do I intend to write them to help people or to inspire others. This is simply a job that I enjoy doing, and honestly, neither should you try to earn millions by being a blogger to build up your bank account like that. So first and foremost, don’t rely on my advice for getting paid to write. And second, please remember, I am not a doctor, and none of these tips will tell you everything there is to know about becoming an article writer for money. I am a journalist who writes regularly on topics related to this topic because I share ideas with my followers. (I will write another article that discusses the differences between paid writing and writing for fun.) Finally, I want to remind everyone that although I’m not saying everyone should become an article writer like myself, there are steps you can take to learn more about getting started as an article writer. That being said, here are five things I wish someone had told me when I asked for a tutorial that I did not receive:

2. What you read in this article is important, however. Yes, this is true. But here’s the key: I’ve read hundreds upon hundreds of articles on where to find freelance online writing jobs. For example, according to Up Work, you should look into these sites to see where your potential clients are already and whether they’ll accept your pitch! There is nothing wrong with this approach, and quite interesting — if you have a knack for creating engaging experiences for your readers. However, please understand that not every single article you read is worth 100 hours of your life. There are countless numbers of ways to make great revenue as an article writer. Therefore, please know that what you read is far from the truth. The best way to figure that out yourself is to research your writing. Check out our top 10 lists of helpful article writing tips and resources. As mentioned earlier, once you’re familiar with your craft, find out what makes each of the freelance writers listed successfully. You may wish to find out about their websites and LinkedIn groups. Look into their professional goals, what motivates them, how they plan their day, and how they interact with their audience. Also, check out their responses at writing jobs and success stories.

3. Many times it happens when I ask questions about someone else’s opinions. In the beginning, I was looking for guidance on which blogging platforms I could use and how to make money to build a following when I wrote about my recent trip to Italy. Of course, I wanted to know what those other options were, too. Once I realized I might have to ask questions that weren’t directly related to my business and, instead, something less formal, like asking about someone else’s opinion on what’s most popular or most profitable. Although it wasn’t the easiest question to ask, asking someone else for advice was one of the best decisions I made to start building my audience without having to put myself in front of a bunch of strangers. Because if someone else can give you genuine insight, why not? Why should I have to read through and weigh the pros and cons of every platform on this list? Don’t worry, I’m sure I won’t get kicked off any blogging platform or that specific site you chose. All you need to do is enter your username and password. Now you have access to over 30,000,000 pieces from verified authors and businesses on various topics. Click the link below to browse the titles and read the reviews. (And please note: Read reviews before reading the posts, especially if the post contains affiliate links. I wouldn’t recommend buying products or services right away unless it’s necessary.)

4. While on the subject of reading reviews, it’s also important to know how to read them and what makes the difference between quality and spammy writing. In the age of cutthroat competition, it’s easy to notice if someone’s trying to grab your attention by selling you stuff that doesn’t meet your needs, and it isn’t always the case that they are trying to sell something. On the other hand, I found several articles on Google when searching about this topic to be pretty straightforward: “How to Make Money From Your Content” and “How to Get Paid to Put Your Head Ringed” both offer simple guides that walk you through the process, but leave plenty of room for variation when it comes to what you decide to blog about. Let me repeat this: Take the time to read through the article and lookup for yourself before you decide that you are about to click out of “how to get paid to put your head ringed” and start scrolling. Read the details, and don’t be scared to run yourself ragged.

5. Lastly, as a last reminder to everyone else, while I talk about how you can make a big amount of passive income by writing, there is still the option to be able to earn passive income by reading about the same ideas and promoting them. Which makes me feel even better about giving away this tip. After all, one person cannot possibly know everything there is to know about how to get paid to write and/or just because he was taught by another who grew his own online business. Most importantly, and as far as I know, the best way to promote an article is to add keywords in your bio description along with your name. Remember, though, that if you promote something you know is valuable in terms of building your blog’s authority (which is usually already established in your niche), you run a risk of losing the chance to monetize that article by sharing it to the web. You may choose to keep this option open for certain types of writing; in fact, most people I met who shared their blog posts on social media and Youtube were aware of this fact. Plus, if you are a serial offender, maybe it’s okay to promote your blog posts, too. It is extremely important to make sure all your efforts are doing more than helping you reach your target audiences, and that the information you are promoting goes beyond your existing blog’s purpose. It is, after all, still one of the primary aspects of running a successful blog. A huge part of your strategy must be to encourage your reader to interact with you via comments, shares, and more besides your blog. The more interactions you get to have, the more opportunities you will have to make money, and the stronger you will come to be as an expert in your field. So, remember, be active in your interaction with your community, and be respectful towards others. The internet is a place where you can spread almost all forms of misinformation. Unfortunately, that information can hurt you and make you one of your biggest enemies. Remember, your audience doesn’t judge or criticize you for the actions you take, even if you do the bad things themselves. They know that what you are doing is good.

So there you have it, folks. These are five things I wish someone tell me when I ask for a guide. By reading through this article, I hope you find that this advice works for you. Hopefully, you find more tips and tricks as you get started. Keep in mind, not everyone loves their blogs and websites and may end up quitting. That’s OK. Just remember that quitting is part of growing your expertise in writing and that you don’t earn a penny for that. Eventually, you will have enough time and money to get enough traffic to your website to earn income. No one knows exactly how to earn from blogging, so it’s hard to say whether all this advice
